I am Powerless

When I came to know Jesus I wondered, “What now?”  There was, it seemed, no one to teach me what to do or where to go next.  That is the purpose of these next pages.  To help you learn to grow and walk in the faith that we are called to live in. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. (Matthew 28:19-20)  That is my goal:  to teach you what it means to be a disciple, disciplined in the ways of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We shall do this in baby steps.  Take your time with each step.  Once again, feel free to print out these pages.  Use them to lean how to walk in the ways of the Lord Jesus.  Let us start with learning about powerlessness.

I am powerless over death, hell, and many of the things in my life that I know that I do that are wrong.  What are you powerless over?  Are you powerless over temper, lust, hatred, bitterness, hurt, envy, strife, sexual unfaithfulness, circumstances or addictions?  What is it that you are powerless over?  It is hard for humans to admit they are powerless over anything.  However, in admitting that one is powerless over things, one can experience the power of the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ.  In learning to walk in faith and grow in the spirit, one must admit there are many things in one’s life that one is powerless over.  I am powerless over other people.  I cannot change anyone, not even myself.  I cannot change my very nature.  However, Jesus can change the very nature of me.  That is what he is longing to do.  He longs to cleanse us from that sin nature and replace it with the nature of himself.

Let us go to scripture to see what it means to be powerless.  Paul says, in Romans 7: 14-25, “ For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do. But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.   So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.  For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.  For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.  But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.  I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:   but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”  Paul was powerless over that sinful nature that was his from birth.  I am powerless over that sinful nature that has been mine from birth.

Today, what you must admit is you are powerless.  You are powerless to do good.  You are powerless to change yourself or others.  You are powerless to walk in the way of faith.  In admitting this, you make a great leap towards learning to live an empowered life in Jesus Christ.  Today, I challenge you to take stock of those things in your life which you are powerless over.  When you have truly admitted that you are powerless, then and only then, can you move on to the next step in spiritual growth.

Here are a few questions to answer to help you to truly admit that you are powerless over, people, feelings, actions, and more.  Please, feel free to copy these and print them out to use as a guideline.  Take your time, but do not dawdle.  The journey to spiritual healing and maturity is scary, at first.  However, it is the best journey, second to the actual salvation experience, you have ever begun.

 1.  Many of us have fears that come to our minds often.  List the fears that continue to haunt your thoughts.

 2.  If you have read my testimony, you will see that I had reason to experience much resentment and anger in my life.  Describe the resentments and anger in  your life.

 3.  I hear parents tell their children, "Shame on you."  Shame is not a good thing; it is a harmful thing.  Describe here how shame and guilt affect your life.

 4.  I don't know about you, but I can be chief on my pity pot.  I wasted many years in self-pity, anguish and sadness.  Give at least three examples of anguish, self-pity and sadness in your life.

 5.  Much of my life has been filled with pain.  I know that much of yours has too, since that is the nature of life.  Describe here how pain has been at work in your life.

 6.  I know loneliness.  I am on a first name basis with it, especially in a crowd of people.  Describe how loneliness feels and when  you feel it.

 7.  There have been many occasions in my life where I have experienced jealousy and envy of others.  I have been envious when I see other people in a healthy marriage relationship.  Describe here how jealousy and envy control a part of you.

 8.  Have you ever been so excited or upset that you were unable to truly function?  Tell how it is to be so excited or upset that you cannot function.

 9.  Do you exhibit behaviors that you do not like?  Make a list of those uncontrollable behaviors.  Be sure to include substances you eat, drink or take to mask your feelings, compulsive behaviors, language that is not appropriate, telling lies, attempting to control others, gambling, and things such as this.

10.  I have experienced times in my life where I was confused, numb or seemed to have no feelings.  Have you ever experienced these and if so, tell about it.

11.  Many of us have physical problems or characteristics that we are not satisfied with.  Things such as loss of appetite, overeating, bone structure, hair type, indigestion, weight, height, eyesight or other such things.  List the things that you do not like about your physical body and its characteristics.

12.  One of the hardest things for me to admit was that I am powerless over the people in my life.  List the people in your life that you are powerless over.  Include your family, church, friends, coworkers, and any and all other people that you cannot control but desire to change.  List the people, what they do and how it irritates you.

When you have gone over this list, look at it with the honesty that the Lord Jesus will give you.  Can you control these things in your life?  Are you, in fact, powerless over these things?  If you are ready to admit that you are, in fact, powerless, write it out in a fashion similar to this:  I, (your name here), am powerless and my life is out of control and unmanageable.  The above statement came to me from my former involvement in the Alcoholics Anonymous program.

Do not despair.  We shall not stop here.  We shall continue this journey together.  Remember, you serve a God of hope.  There is hope in Jesus.

Father, today I lift each of those to you who long to learn a new and better way to live through Jesus.  Give them your strength to admit where they are powerless.  In Jesus name guide us as we learn to walk in you.  In Jesus name cover them with the blood of Jesus and heal them by his stripes.  In Jesus name, let this be the beginning of a new and powerful relationship with the Almighty Creator God, the Judge of all the Ages.  In Jesus name, I praise you and loose the powers of heaven upon the behalf of each person that comes to this page to learn more of you.  In Jesus name the forces of hell are bound.  Denial is revealed and trust has replaced the lies of the enemy.  In Jesus name I leave them in your mighty hands, amen.
