Bryan's Poem

Letting the Pain Go
Bryan S. Thompson
June 10, 2003

You have to let the pain go,
If you really want to know
What true happiness is.

You can't live in the past 'cause
You will be going nowhere fast.

I had to learn this lesson too,
And now I know the truth.

It has taken a long time for me,
And now my soul is at peace.

I know the road is long and hard,
And sometimes it seems there's no end in sight.

That is when I had to not give in without a fight.
I had to let the pain go, it was eating me alive.

Now I have to look ahead and get on with my life.
No more living in pain and misery
Only good things are in store for me.

Opening Remarks
Pastor Dennis Chapman

Eagles teach us about God.
"I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself"
Exodus 19:4

Eagles can have a wing span of up to 12 feet or more and climb on the winds to great heights. They do this in order to escape preditors and storms.

Baby eagles are carried on backs of their mothers. Great care is taken by the mother as she protects the eaglets, provides for them and pushes them to learn to fly.

As she flies high she has the ability to deliver the baby eaglets from danger and with her absolute swiftness she has the ability to come to rescue of or give resources to the eaglets.

The Lord LIFTED Bryan up on as on eagles wings ... He rescued him from the perils, dangers and predators of this world and his life here and delivered him to his home in Heaven.

Isaiah 40:31
"But they that wait upon the LORD
shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles,
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint"

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks?  The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come.

When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm.  While the storm rages, below the eagle is soaring above it.  The eagle does not escape the storm, it simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.

When the storms of life come upon us ... and all of us will experience them ... we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God.

The storms do not have to overcome us, we can allow God's power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure, and disappointment into our lives.  We can soar above the storm.

Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.

The Family Remembers

Eulogies were given by Bryan's father, Roger; and his brothers, Craig and Troy.

Troy read Bryan's poem, "Letting The Pain Go", which was found in his wallet when he died.  The poem was in the Memorial Program and also on a bookmark with Bryan's picture on it which was handed out at his service.

In remembering his son, Roger read the following, Craig spoke from his heart about his brother and Pastor Chapman read "Thy Will be Done" for Cathy, Bryan's mother.

by Roger, Bryan's father

This kid had a healthy set of lungs ...
I could hear him from the Father's Waiting Room.
All of a sudden ... we were not two but three!

I am sure all young fathers feel the same way.
WOW!  I'm a Daddy!
How come it's so small??
Oh, it's a boy!

Time has a habit of flying by.
Mommy is going to have a baby.
Bryan is confused.
"Mommy, do you have a baby in your tummy?"
Yes
(serious expression)
"How does the baby eat?"
When Mommy eats the baby eats.
(deep thinking)
"If he doesn't open his mouth .. TOUGH LUCK!"

Bryan said it like it was.

Bryan ... thanks for the Memories!

Read by Pastor Chapman for Bryan's mother, Cathy

"I'll lend you for a little time, a child of Mine" He said,
"For you to love while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead.
It maybe six or eleven years, or twenty-two or thirty-seven;
but will you 'til I call for him, take care of him for Me?
He'll bring his charm to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
you'll have his lovely memory as solace for your grief."

"I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return;
but there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I've looked this wide world over, in My search for teachers true,
and from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
For I know you'll give him all your love and not think the labor vain,
nor hate me when I come to call and take him back again.
I fancy that I hear you say,

"Dear Lord, Thy Will be done, for all the joy
my child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may,
and for the happiness we've known, we'll forever grateful stay.
But, should the angels call for him much sooner than we'd planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that come,
and try to understand."

Bryan was laid to rest at Simi Valley Pioneer Cemetery, Simi Valley, CA.  Pall Bearers were his father, Roger; his brothers, Craig and Troy; his cousins, Chris and Casey; his best friend, Jimmy; and his nephew, Anthony.

Pastor Chapman spoke of when Bryan had come to know the Lord and was saved.  It was at Ironwood Christian Camp, in the summer of 1975, when he was only 9 1/2 years old.  Bryan followed the Lord in Believer's Baptism in May 1976 at Bible Baptist Church in Victorville, CA.

Midge, Destiny's Aunt, spoke from her heart about Bryan at the Graveside Service, and his friend Scott "Rufus" read the Eulogy below, which was a joint effort, written by Bryan's friends.

Eulogy

We are gathered here today,
to commemorate the life of Bryan.
Not to mourn his passing,
but, to celebrate his memory.

His presence may be gone from our lives,
but, will live on in our hearts,
and in the hearts of all those who he touched,
along his way down the path of life.

The path he walked through this world,
was his own, and now has come to an end.

But, our paths still go on,
and he will be there with us,
in spirit and in memory,
in our thoughts and our hearts,
until our paths come together again.

At the close of the Graveside Service for Bryan,
Jack, of Reardon's Simi Valley Mortuary sang ...
I'll Walk with God
Words by Paul Francis Webster
Music by Nicholas Brodszky

I'll Walk with God from this day on.
His helping hand I'll lean upon.
This is my prayer, my humble plea,
May the Lord be ever with me.

There is no death, tho' eyes grow dim.
There is no fear when I'm near to Him.
I'll lean on Him forever
And He'll forsake me never.

He will not fail me
As long as my faith is strong,
Whatever road I may walk along.

I'll Walk with God, I'll take His hand.
I'll talk with God, He'll understand.
I'll pray to Him, each day to Him
And He'll hear the words that I say.

His hand will guide my throne and rod
And I'll never walk alone
While I walk with God

As they left the Graveside Service, Bryan's parents, Cathy and Roger; grandparents, Tom and Gloria; brothers, Craig and Troy; and his children, William, and Destiny and step-daughter, Ashley, each placed a long-stemmed red rose on his casket signifying their love for him.

GOODBYE ... for now

until we meet again -
