RBC — Three Meeker residents were killed Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident after the driver failed to negotiate a turn on Highway 64 while traveling at a high rate of speed.
Shelli Walters, 36, was driving a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Highway 64 at a reported 91 mph when she entered “Cook’s Corner” about 15 miles east of Rangely at milepost 36.
The vehicle rotated counterclockwise off the right side of the road, rolled over 1/2 time and collided with a metal garage, according to reports from the Colorado State Patrol.
The accident happened at about 5:05 p.m.
Walters was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover.
She was driving with a suspended Colorado license and was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Roy Kinney at 6:03 p.m.
Passenger Bryan Thompson, 37, was also ejected during the rollover and fatally injured as was passenger Ronald J. Bigelow, 47.
Two additional passengers, Megan Ballinger, 20, and Dustin Peters, 20, both of Meeker, were taken by ambulance to the Rangely District Hospital. According to the CSP, Peters had minor injuries and Ballinger had moderate injuries.
Ballinger was transferred to Community Hospital in Grand Junction and was released Tuesday.
Peters was arrested after release from the hospital and taken to the Rio Blanco County jail on a outstanding warrant from Mesa County for failure to appear. He posted a $600 bond Sunday, Sept. 21.
Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the incident though the accident remains under investigation by the CSP.
