There's Only One True Celebrity
By Elena Ramirez
Recently, we have heard a lot about how some celebrities have met their end and death has come to them; from Michael Jackson to Farrah Fawcett, Billy Mays, and Ed McMahon. I see people crying and mourning for these, and the news coverage is phenomenal.
Trying to understand what has happened, I have read and heard coverage that covers why they died, how they died, and what they did before they died ... for a sense of understanding; and nothing is wrong with that. But what concerns me more (and I am not judging them because one can not judge unless they've walked in someone's shoes) is that I see, in all of these talented people, gifts; either in beauty or music, or the ability to speak effectively.
Relating to someone like Ed McMahon, who had a voice in Hollywood, he was able to speak, "Here's Johnny." But, can you imagine if he would have said, "Here's Jesus Christ"? He had the podium, a forum; from either the Johnny Carson's show or the talent show he was affiliated with. He could have made a difference.
Farrah Fawcett was known to be a 'Charlie's Angel'. She was beautiful, artistic, and also a sculptor. Michael Jackson was groomed to be a voice as well. He had a talent and ability to sing and dance. And most people, from my generation, could relate to especially these two, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. We grew up listening to them, or watching them on television. I know I admired Michael Jackson's music gift and Farrah Fawcett's beauty and poise ... her beautiful hair.
But as we saw them, through the years and up until now, I look at the fruit. I look at what they were known for, and what they took in their celebrity gifts. In other words, I look at what they accomplished in their lifetimes ... and I just wonder what their legacy might have been if they had used their gifts and callings for the glory of God. Can you imagine all the people that would have been introduced to Jesus Christ - if Michael Jackson had used his gifts and dancing to give glory to God instead of the dance to the dead? (That video did not thrill me. It was art that imitated life through death; freaky.) Or what if Farrah Fawcett had used her calling of an angel to give glory to God, for people to seek Him; to paint or sculpt in holiness? not just in the beauty of the human body. Or if Billy Mays had been an advertising man for God, not only for soap?
Maybe they did so in private or, maybe, it was never revealed 'from the media' things they did. Maybe they were grateful to God. Maybe, somehow, that was expressed. But I never hear it from Hollywood ... I don't know. God only knows.
But it just saddens me that 'what we hear', in so many ways, was confused individuals who made wrong choices. And yes, we can all make mistakes if we do not do it God's way. But I just know, if I had a way, I would express all that God has done. I would sing for Him, I would shine for Him. I would want to be an angel for God, but a living angel; "on earth as it is in heaven," like the Lord's prayer says. I want my life to be an extension here, to prove my love for God - to shine for Him; for God to get glory and honor.
Each one of us has a gift, a special talent, that God has given us. My gift is knowing God is a good God; and to give glory to Him, because He loves me, blesses me. To me, that is a gift 'when you just know that you know' God is God and there is none else. It releases me in things I have no control over. But of course, He has control over everything ... and I mean everything; I do not underestimate Him. Sometimes, I do me; but, never Him.
So, I write this, in my gift and calling, to God be the glory, because writing is my outlet. But my hope's desire, as you look at your own gifts, is ... use it to the glory of God. Let people know who you are in Christ, as you use your gift (whether it is just being able to sew, or cook, or clean house, for that matter); use it to bring glory to God.
Tell people you are using your gift to bless them because God has blessed you, especially in your salvation. The best that God has given us is the cross, and His truth; His word to live a life 'worthy to give Him glory'. Don't hide your faith. Be bold. Be grateful to share it. Life is so short.
And I know I, myself, am somewhat mournful in the passing of these people. But, they are only people. I will not put them on a pedestal, or go to the extreme by idolizing them. There is only one who deserves our adoration. There is only one true celebrity, that is Jesus Christ. He is the one who suffered for our sins, for all of us (celebrities, and non-celebrities) to give us life, life abundantly; to cancel the purpose of the enemy, to take back our lives to live fruitful lives.
God is not a respector of persons. And though He blesses us, He expects our obedience (and our adoration and honor) to go to Him. He is God alone. The one we really need to please is God. I just wish I had known sooner; maybe I would have avoided a lot of mistakes. But, I trust God. He is not done with me, yet. That is my Prayer of Hope.
So anyway, maybe you can just learn from these people and their mistakes, their celebrity opportunities, and give the glory to God. You would be surprised to see how blessed you really are as you make giving God the purpose of blessing and giving Him the honor in who you are.
Thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
And the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
Psalm 86:10, Romans 11:29
