BRIEF ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS

By Mary-Ellen Grisham
JESUS HEALS ON THE DAY OF REST
Scripture: John 5:1-15 The healing of an invalid at the pool of Bethesda
Memory Verse: "For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does." John 5:20a
Warm-ups: Choose one
1. Give each child a bandaid, teaching each one how to open and apply it properly.
2. Using a basin of warm, sudsy water, have the children pair up to wash each other's hands. Towel dry.
3. Show pictures of people doing good. Discuss if the actions are appropriate for Sunday.
Simple Story: Jesus shows God's love everyday, based on John 5:1-15.
Jesus came up to an invalid man who was lying by a pool near one of Jerusalem's gates. Many disabled came to rest by this pool because there was a belief that every so often an angel of the Lord came down to stir the waters of the pool. After the waters were stirred, the first person in the pool was healed. The man Jesus talks with had been an invalid for thirty-eight years but had never been able to be the first one in the pool after the stirring of the waters.
Jesus asks the man if he wants to get well--an important question because each of us must make a decision to choose to be well and whole. The man tells Jesus that he has no one to help him. So Jesus helps him. He tells him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." And the man was instantly cured and walked.
Because it was the day ordained as a day of rest by God, the Jewish Sabbath, the Jews questioned that the man should carry his mat. They did not understand that it was more important to heal the man than worry about his carrying the mat. Jesus was not trying to cause the man to work but to walk on his own with no help. He was showing God's love.
Later, Jesus warns the healed man to keep from sinning so that he will remain well in body, mind, and spirit. We should remember to quit doing wrong so that we, too, can be the best we can be!
Special Learning: Look up Exodus 20:8-11. Discuss what this Commandment means for New Testament Christians who have church on Sunday, rather than Saturday.
Question: Why is it important to help people when they need help?--and not delay!
Love Actions: Try to help at least one person this week who really needs your help.
