BRIEF ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS

By Mary-Ellen Grisham
JESUS TEACHES HIS DISCIPLES AN IMPORTANT LESSON
Scripture: John 13:1-17 Jesus Washes His Disciples Feet
Memory Verse: I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. John 13:16
Warm-ups: Take several basins or dish washing tubs and fill them with warm water and bubble bath, or a little dish-washing soap. Have old towels or clean rags on hand. Have the children wash each other's feet, working in pairs. Be sure to keep shoes and socks away from the water.
Simple Story: Jesus knew that his time to leave this world and return to the Father was near. He knew he would be crucified for men's sins and rise from the dead. While he did not look forward to the suffering, his main concern at this time was for his followers. He wanted them to be prepared to carry on the Christian message and way.
At the Passover meal, or Last Supper, he wanted to show his disciples his love and teach them how to serve. After taking off his outer cloak, He wrapped a towel around his waist, poured water into a basin, and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel. Simon Peter objected to the Lord washing his feet until he understood that the ritual cleansing was an example of service and love, and that he needed to submit to Jesus' washing.
As he explains to Peter that 'only the feet' need to be washed, to get off the walking dust, Jesus suggests that all the disciples except one are clean. He means that their faith in Jesus has cleansed them of sin, except for Judas who will betray Jesus to the chief priests; so that they will be able to send soldiers to capture Jesus.
Jesus explains to the disciples that, if He performs this service, they should be prepared to serve each other and many others. They are to be God's servants by teaching others about Jesus and helping them.
Special Learning: Judas Iscariot took thirty pieces of silver, from the chief priests, as payment for handing Jesus over to them. Later, he regrets his actions and returns the silver which is used to buy a burial ground for foreigners. Judas then hanged himself. (Matthew 26:14-16 and Matthew 27:1-10) Teacher may want to explain the Passover meal commemorating the protection of Jewish homes in Egypt, also.
Question: Why did Peter object to the Lord washing his feet?
Love actions: Help a small brother or sister put on and tie their shoes, or help Mom with a chore you do not normally want to do.
