BRIEF ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS

Lessons for Elementary School Children

JESUS TEACHES A BLIND MAN TO SEE THE TRUTH

Scripture
: John 9:1-41

Memory Verse: Mark 8:18 "Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear?"

Warm-ups: Choose one
1. Play different versions of Blind Man's Bluff, with one child wearing a blind fold and searching for classmates (who either remain in place or move around, depending on the version of the game you choose first).
2. Have students close their eyes and listen for clues that will indicate certain activities.

Simple Story: based on John 9:1-41.

As Jesus and his disciples walked along, they saw a man who had been blind since birth. Jesus explained to his disciples that the blindness was not caused by sin of the blind man or his parents. He was blind so that the work of God could be displayed in his life, and Jesus was in the world to do God's work and to bring light and understanding to men.

Jesus then heals the blind man by putting mud on his eyes and telling him to go to the Pool of Siloam to wash. When the blind man does what Jesus asked, he goes home seeing. His neighbors, who have seen him as the blind beggar, question him, and he explains how Jesus healed him.

Jewish religious leaders called Pharisees question the blind man and his parents about the healing because they had many doubts about Jesus. The man explains how he was healed by Jesus, and his parents confirm that he had been blind since birth. Even though the Pharisees continue to question him, the healed man stands up for Jesus. He tells them that Jesus is from God because only a godly person could do such a great healing.

The healed man then talks again with Jesus and accepts him as the Christ, God's son. Jesus tells the man that he came into the world to heal and bring truth so that people will understand God's truth and be free of sin. The Pharisees do not fully understand God's truth.

Special learning: When the Pharisees question the healed man a second time, they urge him to "give glory to God." This direction, based on Joshua 7:19, means that the Pharisees want the healed man to tell the truth and praise God for the healing. They think Jesus is a sinner and do not understand that he is the Messiah, God's son.

Question: Do you blame God for problems in your life?

Love Actions: Possible choices
1. Stand up for Jesus by telling the truth in a difficult situation.
2. Treat handicapped children with love and respect.
