The Little One Room School
'Twas many many years ago
There was a house very small
Where children attended this one room school
Yes, this school was meant for all.
From primer to the eighth grade
They were seated in the room
Recess both morning and evening
And all had their lunch at noon.
They were welcomed by the teacher,
This was usually at the door
The children smiling, entered in,
And the teacher asked for no more.
The bottles of milk and pails of food
Were by the students brought
They came for an education
'Twas then what the teacher thought.
Reading, writing and arithmetic
Were stressed highly in that time.
They knew with basic training
Other subjects would fall in line.
That old schoolhouse is now gone
And all the smiling faces
Of teacher and the students
The four lanes taking its place.
