My Sweet Lady

My first dog I want to remember and tell you about is "Lady."  She was a mixed breed. She was about the color of a collie.  Someone had let her out near our house, and she made her way to our porch and laid down. She had decided that this was to be her new home.  She was very scared and skittish. If she heard a loud voice, she would dodge like she was going to be beaten or hit.  My heart went out to her and I named her Lady for when she wasn't afraid, she walked with dignity. When I would go out on the porch and talk to her she would always come and nuzzle her head against me as she was slowly finding her way to my heart.  Daddy one day said to Mother and me and we had to take her off that she was a female and we couldn't keep her.  I remember that day so much in my mind because it was one of the saddest days of my life (up to that point).  Mother and I got her in the car and I was holding Lady in my lap. We lived in a little town in Tennessee and we were  going to drive out of the city, but we hadn't quite made it when Lady laid her head over on my shoulder and started crying very loud. I had never heard a dog cry. I didn't even think that you would know when they were crying.  It was so pitiful and heart wrenching that Mother and I looked at each other and said that we couldn't take her off.  We turned around  and went back home and I told Daddy that I would have her Spayed. That was a decision that I never regretted. Lady gave me more unconditional love than any dog, or pet that I had up to that time.  She followed me anywhere I went. If I went to the mailbox, she went with me. We had a bench in our yard and when I went to sit on it,  Lady would come and jump up on the bench and lay her head on my shoulder, telling me that she loved me. Lady though begin to feel so at home at our house that she began to roam around the neighborhood. One day she brought a package all wrapped wrapped  up and laid it at my feet.  I had no ideal where she had gotten it. I called as many of the neighbors as I knew their names and telephone numbers and no one missed a package.  I opened it and it was a box of candy. I bet I was the first pet owner that ever got a wrapped box of candy from their loving Pet.  I could go on and on about what Lady meant to me. She lived a very long live. We even moved and took her with us. She was very happy in her new home. As long as she was with us. We fenced in our yard so she wouldn't chase cars and get killed.  I wanted her to live as long as she could.  I knew I would have to give her up one day, but I didn't want it happen before it had to. She was 16 years old when she died. She was one of the most loving and giving dogs I ever had. I miss her even today.
