The 6 Basic Regions in Virginia

NORTHERN VIRGINIA REGION
This historic region lends itself to the touring of private
homes and public buildings. Priceless antiques and
stunning architecture can be seen at locations such
as Mount Vernon, Woodlawn, Gunston Hall and Kenmore.
Elegant shops and restaurants dot the area. Driving and
walking tours of Civil War battle sites allow visitors to
retrace the steps of Confederate and Union soldiers.

TIDEWATER AND HAMPTON ROADS
REGION
Amerca's first permanent English settlement
Jamestown (1607) marks this region, as the
nation's oldest. Modern-day explorers can relive
Colonial times on the unearth streets of Jamestown
Island, the original site. Harbor towns line the
Atlantic coast, which offers miles of sandy beaches.
The National Park Service exhibits a full scale
reconstruction of the Glasshouse of 1608.
Norfolk Naval Base offers a narrated tour
of the worlds largest naval base.
There are many museums, cruises and gardens
to enjoy in this region.

EASTERN SHORE REGION
Lying between the Chesapeake Bay and
the Atlantic Ocean, the Eastern Shore
of Virginia is a picturesque peninsula
with historic homes and gardens. It is
joined to Virginia's mainland by the
17.6 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
Home of the wild ponies and the
largest migratory bird sanctuaries
on the East Coast.

CENTRAL VIRGINIA REGION
Backroad drives wind their way past
historic plantations and through
famous Revolutionary and Civil
war battle sites. Hundreds of lakes,
rivers, and streams provide ample
fishing opportunities. The foothills
of the Blue Ridge Mountains provide
stunning contrast to the hustle and
bustle of gleaming cities.
Many historical homes and battlefields
are found in this area. Richmond,
the capital is found here, which
has much to offer.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY REGION
Rich in natural beauty, the Shenandoah
Valley region is marked by the Blue
Ridge Mountains and by the glittering
limestone caverns. Cascading waterfalls
throw a rainbow of colors into the misty
mountain air. George Washington's
office museum is in Winchester.

SOUTHWEST BLUE RIDGE
HIGHLANDS REGION
Outstanding Breaks Interstate Park
and Cumberland Gap National Historical
Park highlight this region which proudly
preserve the mountain heritage. This
pride is well displayed in the region's
music festivals, mountain craft stores,
and the lively steps of local square
dancers and cloggers.
