              WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

But Jesus called them unto him, and said, “Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.  But it shall not be so among you; but whosever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.  Even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:25-28

One of the most amazing sights for our Lord must be when He sees humans let their ambition control them as they fight for seniority in His Kingdom.  In Matthew 20:20-28, we see such an example.  The disciples were arguing over who would be the greatest.  The mother of James and John wanted Jesus to commit to having both of her sons enthroned around Himself (one on each side).  Of course this didn’t sit very well with the other disciples and an argument ensued.

It was then that Jesus outlined the characteristics of a Kingdom leader...qualities much different than those of a leader in the “world.” You see, Jesus said to become great in God’s kingdom you had to be a servant, not a boss, and that put a whole new slant on leadership.  In God’s Kingdom, the way to greatness is not how well you use your gift, but how well you can become a gift and a help to others.  He is more interested in our motives to use our gifts than our actual gifts. Will our gifts bring glory to ourselves or to Him?

Want to be a leader in God’s Kingdom?  Know this, the only ability He really needs is our availability...to be used by Him in the way He has chosen.  The talented and gifted need not apply, that is, unless they are willing to serve others.  You see, that’s because it is not us, but Christ in us that gets the job done...and Christ said, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28).”   And, interestingly enough, servanthood really does give way to leadership when done with the right motives and a pure heart.  It is the servants who will one day be great in the Kingdom...  ”What’s in it for me?” should never be an issue.
