Perhaps you had an overhead light, a lamp, and the television illuminating everything in view. Then, without warning, you heard a loud crash of thunder and everything in the house went completely dark. Suddenly, your own corner of the world disappeared, and you sat shaken in a blanket of darkness. The dark can be rather intimidating, can’t it? In one fell swoop, our masterfully created eyes are rendered useless. In a room through which we normally run without thinking, we are required to go slowly, one step at a time, judging each stride carefully against a mental image of the room’s layout. While most people do not like this feeling of helplessness, there are some benefits. For example, the slow pace causes us to stop and make decisions: do I take one more step . . . is this as far as I should go? Also, the dark times make us better appreciate the moments in life when things are crystal clear. Sometimes, our spiritual lives seem to darken a bit and we find ourselves inching along with our hand stretched out before us as we desperately seek the Lord. Don’t fear these times. Instead, treasure them as moments when God wants you to tread carefully and make wise decisions. When the darkness is over, you will be amazed at how brightly His glory can shine.
