Amazing Grace

In the year 1725 a boy was born into a devout Christian family; but orphaned at the age of 7, his new guardians made him disavow his faith. Miserable and rebellious, he ran away to sea. His wild nature brought him many adventures and narrow escapes, until, finding himself cast into the hold of an African trading vessel for drunken behaviour, he reflected back to his early childhood. When the ship came close to sinking in a violent storm, he experienced a spiritual awakening. Two years later he was ordained as a minister and went on to write over 100 hymns. One of them was Amazing Grace......

Amazing Grace John Newton American Traditional

A-maz-ing grace! how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How pre-cious did that grace ap-pear

The hour I first be-lieved!
