~ A DAY SUCH AS THIS? ~
By
Teressa Vowell

As
a small child I loved to pretend I was a teacher. I had a
small chalkboard and I discovered that if I opened a
dresser drawer just enough for the board to slide into
it, the chalkboard would stand up on its own. Somewhere
along the way I had acquired some chalk and an eraser,
and even though I couldn't yet write ~ I could squiggle.
Besides those little stuffed animals that I was trying to
teach the ABC's to didn't know the difference! God was
preparing me for such a day as this!
As the years went by I learned to write and my school
teachers would let us take home outdated school books ~
thus began a whole curriculum of reading, writing and
arithmetic. My stuffed toys graduated and I found myself
faced with a whole new classroom full of invisible boys
and girls. They had no faces, but they all had names and
personalities. Some were smart, some were slow, some were
nice, but of course there was always that one unruly
child that plagues every teacher.
My new classroom was Mom's washer and dryer room. I put
up my chalkboard, opened my books and taught everything I
knew, while dealing with each child's special need. Some
of those needs were hard to see, especially since the
child itself was hard to see! I know Mom must have
laughed to herself as she'd pass by and hear me teaching
or correcting that one wayward child that had somehow
gotten out of hand. I don't blame her, I would have
laughed too~ how could she have known then that God was
preparing me for such a day as this?
One day someone got me one of those dolls that stood
about three feet tall. I think she was supposed to be
like a little sister, but instead I made her my child. I
put one of my dresses on her and walked her to my class.
That was a feat all in itself because her knees didn't
bend, so I would hold her hand and twist her right then
left until we finally waddled our way together into that
classroom! I was honored to be my child's teacher.
My little girl dream for when I grew up was to be a
teacher and have 10 kids! Thankfully not all dreams come
true- seriously I didn't know it then, but God was
preparing me once again for such a day as this!
For here I am- a teacher and for a couple days out of the
week I have many kids...God had prepared me years ago,
but I didn't know that was what He was doing. I thought I
was just having fun!
So
what is God preparing you for? Ephesians 2:10 says,
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to
do."
What do you pretend to be? What dreams do you want to
come true? Do you hide a special ability or talent? Be
sure that God does not want you to waste it! Philippians
1:6 says, ..."being confident of this, that he who
began a good work in you will carry it on to completion
until the day of Christ Jesus."
You may not understand all that happens in your life,
from the lighthearted to the overwhelming, but God has a
purpose for it all. Listen to what Ephesians 1:9-12 tells
us, "And he made known to us the mystery of his will
according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in
Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have
reached their fulfillment- to bring all things in heaven
and on earth together under one head, even Christ. In him
we were also chosen, having been predestined according to
the plan of him who works out everything in conformity
with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were
the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of
his glory."
So let no one steal away your hopes and dreams, do not be
discouraged or afraid~ keep pressing onward! One day
you'll hear Him say to you, "Well done, good and
faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few
things: I will put you in charge of many things. Come and
share your master's happiness!" (Matthew 25:23 NIV)
That's when you can look back and say~
"God prepared me for such a day as this!"
